11/06/2011 -

UMBC's Alec Pence (Chopticon High) won the Messiah College tournament yesterday in Grantham, Pa.

Pence, who competes at 197 pounds, defeated wrestlers from McDaniel, Ursinus, Messiah and Case Western to capture the championship. He is the first UMBC wrestler to win the event since the Retrievers began attending the tournament three years ago.

UMBC is the only NCWA team at the tournament; all others are NCAA varsity squads.

Last year, Pence won a Mid-Atlantic Conference title for the Retrievers.

Teammate Brian Samuels (Leonardtown High) also placed at the Messiah tournament for UMBC, finishing fourth at 149.
