Bear start off strong
Coming off of a tough tournament at the Citadel, the Mercer wrestling team traveled to Rome, GA, to compete in the 2nd Annual Roman Open, hosted by Shorter University. Despite the high level of competition, the team had an impressive showing, with three wrestlers in the finals.
When asked how he felt about his teamís performance, Coach Andres said, ďThis tournament was a step in the right direction. The effort that the guys have put in at practice is definitely showing on the mat, and itís still early in the season. We will continue to improve by out-working our competition in the practice room and start winning more of the close matches that make the difference in going home with a medal. By the time nationals comes around, I think we have a good shot at making top 5 this year.Ē
Down by one point with about seven seconds on the clock, Charlie Farr (197) scored a two-point takedown against his opponent to win Mercerís only gold medal. Both Nick Wright (125) and Chris Coney (174) coasted through to the finals but fell short of the championship by one match, ending the day in second place. Derek Wojcik (184) and Jeffrey Holmes (174) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Other match winners were Wesley Adams (133), Johnny Miller (141), Andrew Eck (157), Hunter Allen (165) and Bert Sykes (285).
