Virginia SID Association Names Three to All-State Team
The Apprentice School wrestling team had three members named on Thursday to the 2011-12 Virginia Sports Information Directors Association All-State team. This team is the only one recognized by VaSID that encompasses all the schools in the state of Virginia.
Freshman Ian Jones was a first-team honoree at heavyweight. He finished the year with a 32-15 record and took seventh place at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. in early March. His 32 wins are the fourth most by a freshman in school history while his 16 wins by fall are the most on the team this year. Jones took second at the Builder Invitational, NCWA Mid-Atlantic Conference Championships and won the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Invitational. His win by fall against Central Florida at the Virginia Duals gave the Builders the team victory. He is a heavy metal fabricator apprentice from Painesville, OH.
Senior Marcus Chevres was one of two second-team honorees for the Builders at 133 pounds. He finished with a 30-4 record and set the career victories record as he ended with a 134-37 mark. Chevres became the second four-time NCWA All-American in school history as he finished third at 133 pounds in the nationals. He had a 16-match winning streak spanning from Jan. 28 to nationals on March 9. Chevres won the USCAA National Invitational at 133 pounds and took his fourth NCWA Mid-Atlantic Conference crown in February – winning 133 pounds for the third straight year after taking the 125 pound bracket as a freshman. This marks the third straight year he was recognized by VaSID as he was a first team selection as a sophomore and now his second straight second-team selection. He is an outside machinist apprentice from Norfolk, VA.
Junior Ty Ford was the other second team selection for the Builders earning honors at 125 pounds. Ford finished the year with a 26-11 record and took sixth at the NCWA Nationals after rolling through the NCWA Mid-Atlantic Conference bracket winning a pair of matches by fall and the title by an 18-3 technical fall. He had an eight-match winning streak and a six-match winning streak during the year. Ford had a spell where he went 18-4 from Nov. 19 – Mar. 8. He is a maintenance electrician apprentice from Norfolk, VA.
