Huskies Take 2nd Place in Connecticut Classic
Storrs, CT-The UConn wrestling team opened its 2013-14 season on National Wrestling Day with a 2nd place finish in their annual Connecticut Classic Wrestling Tournament held in the Willis N. Hawley Armory Gym in front of an overflow crowd. UMass, with 70 pts., edged UConn by 3.5 pts. in the 10 team field. The Minutemen passed UConn by winning the last 3 wt. classes as Jake Stallone, Brian Stapleton and Emmit Tkach all won individual titles. UConns two individual titles were won by Joey Battinelli @ 157 lbs. and Freshman Joe Maida @ 133 lbs., who was selected as the winner of the Bryan Simons Outstanding Wrestler Award for the event. 3rd place UAlbany, with 57.5 pts., was led by Nicolas Engert @ 125 lbs., who was the only champion of their 4 finalists. Other champions included Northeasterns Luke Baroda & Jason Dack, Kevin Jimenez of SUNY-Westchester and Kyle Parella of SUNY-Cortland. Defending National Champion Cassie Corey was the Womens Div. Champion and was selected for the John Bulldog Satti Outstanding Wrestler Award for Women.
The UConn wrestling team is entering its 6th season of competition in the NCWA and is poised to compete at a high level with many new faces in the starting lineup.
