Curtis Leads RPI at Doug Cherry Invitational
EASTON, PA. – Junior Stuart Curtis upset 2012 All-American Alec Pence from UMBC 3-1 in the 197lb. finals to lead the way for a 2nd place team finish for RPI at the 17th annual Doug Cherry Invitational at Lafayette College Saturday, February 1st. The Engineers were out pointed by NJCAA Gloucester County College for the team title.
A late 3rd period takedown sealed the title for Curtis and his first victory over the UMBC senior. Tied 1-1 going into the third period, neither wrestler scored until Curtis countered a shot with a front headlock and spun behind on the edge of the mat with only seconds to go to nab his first college tournament victory of his career.
Three other RPI wrestlers also reached the finals on the day. Alec Vogel at 133 lbs., Conner Burns at 165 lbs. and Enrico Cascio at 184 lbs. all made their way to the finals with impressive wins but were defeated in their title bouts. Freshman Kyle Miller and sophomore Omar Abdoun both wrestled back to take 4th place at 184 lbs. and 197 lbs. respectively. Alex Petersen at 125 lbs., Ryan Ford at 165 lbs., Ray Douglas at 174 lbs. and Brad Huizinga at 235 lbs. were also in action for RPI and wrestled solid matches throughout the day but came up short of placing in the top four.
