UW-Milwaukee Wins One at National Duals
January 14, 2007
-Cedar Falls, IA
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Wrestling Club hit the mats this weekend at the nation's premier dual meet championships, the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. Top NCAA DI, DII, and DII programs from colleges and universities across the country, as well as NAIA, NJCAA, NCWA and women's division, programs were invited to battle for the national championship in their respective divisions.
The Panthers had their hands full, taking on currently #1-ranked University of Central Florida, followed by defending NCWA national champions Grand Valley State University and top challengers Kansas State University, in a two-day round robin format competition. In each meet, the opposing coaches selected an Outstanding Wrestler of the meet, from the opposing squad.
The first bout, against UCF, was a rough start for the club, which had last competed December 10th at the Milwaukee Duals. UW-M started the meet forfeiting the 125-lb. weight class, as freshman Tom Hansen recently underwent surgery after a season-ending ankle injury. The Panthers were unable to pull off any victories in the meet, though club founder Gabriel Wahhab was selected Outstanding Wrestler of the UW-M squad, for his close loss at 149 lbs.
After a short recovery period, the Panthers faced GVSU in another high-scoring meet. At 174 lbs., Arturo Martinez, Jr. stepped up his intensity in a match that ended with his winning by an injury default. Heavyweight Brady Hundt also scored team points, with a forfeit, ending the first day of competition for the Panthers. Martinez was UW-M's Outstanding Wrestler of the meet.
The Panthers re-grouped with an inspirational visit to the newly opened Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum (www.wrestlingmuseum.org). Following the second-day weigh-in, the UW-Milwaukee wrestlers were ready to validate their National Duals trip, against a tough Kansas State club. Club officer Nicholas Tadeo got things started at 133 lbs., quickly finishing up an attack and setting up a spladle his opponent did not see coming, to gain a pin in just 1:32. Freshman Terrance Welch also increased his intensity, controlling the action and finishing with a 7-4 decision that earned him the final OW award. Wahhab earned a forfeit, as did club officer Sean Lueck at 157 lbs. Freshman Mike Huth showed potential with a tenacity that netted him the first takedown of the match; unfortunately, an opportune countermove by his opponent ended the match early. Martinez (174 lbs.) earned his second victory of the tournament by forfeit. Club President Darin Kwilinski fought to save team points for the team by moving up a weight class but was overtaken by NCWA All-American, and eventual OW of the NCWA division of the tournament, Steve Kern. Brady Hundt gained another victory, by fall, after working hard to create an opportunity to attack, which he seized and maximized.
The Panthers, many of whom moved up a weight class or two for the dual meets, to avoid giving up forfeits, will be in full force, at their competitive weight classes, this coming weekend, as they return to the Florida Classic, hosted by the University of Florida, in Gainesville.
