02/27/2007 -

Defending 2006 NCWA National Champion, Grand Valley State University, host of the 2007 North Central Conference Championships, won the NCC crown with a total of 217.5 points, a margin of 73 points over second place Mott Community College. Mott made a strong showing at second with 144.5 points, followed by third place University of Southern Indiana at 98 points, fourth place Miami University at 85 points and fifth place Bowling Green State University at 73 points.

The GVSU team counts as members nine returning NCWA All Americans, including National Champions, Billy Johnson (165), Michael Paul (174) and Tony Ferguson (184). Johnson, Paul and Ferguson each won their respective weight classes at this year’s NCC Championships. GVSU claimed eight firsts and eight seconds at the 2007 regionals, and will send twenty-three wrestlers to Nationals.

Three other teams also had 2007 National Qualifiers numbering in the double digits. Mott qualified eleven, and USI and BGSU each qualified ten wrestlers for Nationals, followed by Miami University at eight and Ohio State University at seven.

In all, the North Central Conference will advance thirteen returning All Americans and four 2006 National Champions, which group also lists University of Toledo’s Adam Murray (197), to the National Championships in Dallas on March 8, 2007.
