MMI Ready for 2008-2009 Season

10/23/2008 -

MARION,AL (10/22/08) - The last two seasons, the Marion Military Institute (MMI) wrestling team has finished the season #5 at the NCWA National Tournament. With the 2008-2009 season already underway, Marion’s coaches Jim and Dave Hazewinkel seem excited about the new season and are looking forward to a good year.

Missing from this years’ line-up is two-time NCWA National Champion Cee-Jay Hamilton who graduated last May, but with several returning wrestlers, Marion should be able to produce another winning season. “We have about twelve returning men which includes Derrick Lucas who wrestled to All American status last year. Other top wrestlers we are counting on include Adam Beavers, Tyler Luker, Darion McClarity, Leonard Leblanc, and Shane Raymond, all who competed well for us last year. We are looking to these men for leadership to direct this team.” Besides these returners, Marion has added about 35 new incoming freshmen that the coaches will look to develop for the tough competition.

The team’s first challenge came at the Georgia Tech University Open this past weekend. Marion took a limited squad of 18 wrestlers to the open tournament and came back with some impressive hardware. The MMI wrestlers who earned medals were: Eddie Digman (1st place - HWT), Reece Freeman (2nd place - 133 lb), Cole Caviness (3rd place - 149 lb), Ed Swindle (3rd place - 235 lb), and Mike Mullen (3rd place – HWT), and Ben Breyette (4th place - 133 lb). Cole Caviness got the fast fall of the tournament as he pinned his opponent in 19 seconds while Terrence Jones earned the most takedowns for MMI with 13.

MMI’s next tournament is November 1st when they travel to the University of the Cumberland’s in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
