Winona State WC begins season. Top story - HS Soph. wins 125 bracket.
The Winona State Wrestling Program began its season with a very small squad attending the Pointer Open at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point this past weekend and found the tournament even tougher than last year. There were 24 teams in attendance from every division of wresting in the nation. Of those 24 teams, 20 of them are ranked in their respective divisions including top ranked teams from D3, NAIA and NJCAA. With such tough competition the wrestling Warriors found the going very tough, and the were only able to win one match with Chad Stenson winning his first round match by pin before losing a tough fought match to the eventual champion. First year competitors Aaron Murray, Luke Wilcox, and Ross Fahey all lost close elimination matches losing by 4, 6 and 2 points respectively.
The story of the tournament however was not the collection of impressive college teams from the region. The top story was Jesse Thielke, a sophomore from Germantown HS in Wisconsin, who won the upper division of the tournament in impressive fashion with a major decision in the finals. Jesse was the Cadet Greco Outstanding Wrestler this past summer at Fargo and an undefeated State Champion as a freshman last year.
The Winona State Warriors travel to Dayton Ohio next weekend to compete in the Dayton Flyer Invitational, followed by a trip up to Augsburg Minnesota the following weekend for the Augie/Brute Open.
Full results of the tournament can be found on the UW-Stevens Point website.
