MMI Takes First at University of Georgia Tournament
Marion Military Institute was one of twelve schools that competed at the University of Georgia Tournament this past weekend. Not only did Marion take home the First Place trophy but they also had a wrestler place in every weight class, a first in school history. MMI finished with 85 points while the University of Georgia took second with 34 points, followed by Kennesaw State University (24 points) and Mercer University (22 points).
Individual wrestlers placing first for Marion were: Terrence Jones (125 lbs), Reece Freeman (133 lbs), Gavin Shoemo (141 lbs), Cole Caviness (149 lbs), Jay Mitchell (157 lbs), Derrick Lucas (167 lbs), and Mike Mullen (HWT). Finishing in second place for Marion was 185 pounder Kyler Kirkwood. Taking third were: Greg Magee (197 lbs) and Heavyweight Shane Raymond. Fourth place finishers were: Terry Long (174 lbs), Jess Foster (157 lbs), Ed Swindle (235 lbs), and Kyle Purcell (HWT). Terrence Jones, Marion's 125 pounder was named the "Most Outstanding Wrestler" at the tournament. The tigers will travel to Carson Newman University for their next tournament on February 14th.
