Rensselaer Rolls to 3rd Straight NYS Title

03/01/2009 -

Albany, NY - The RPI wrestling team successfully defended it's New York State dual meet championship title Sunday the 22nd at near by host Albany Academy High School.

En route to it's 3rd straight title, RPI defeated SUNY Cobleskill 45-9, Hofstra University 43-12, Hudson Valley C.C. 51-3 and SUNY Albany 58-6. There were several great matches on the day, two being RPI's Jeff Streu @ 125 lbs. facing SUNY Cobleskills Carlo Izzo, a 4th place New York State High School place finisher and again facing Hudson Valley C.C.'s Jeremy Cuomo, a New York State High School Champion from last year. Streu lost a tight match to Izzo 5-6 and beat Cuomo again, this time with a score of 10-8 in overtime. Another highlight was a rematch of the Bryant University Groundhog Invitational finals at 133 lbs., pitting RPI's Ethan Kirk against another New York State High School champion from Hudson Valley C.C. in Brian Borst. The result was the same though with Borst edging Kirk by a score of 4-3.

4th Year Coach Brad Nelson had the following to say about the State duals: "We're happy we defended our title today and we wrestled well, but there's definitely room for improvement. We've been working hard and that hard work is starting to pay off, with hopefully the major pay-offs coming at the Conference Championships and Nationals." Coach Nelson also commented on the other New York State teams saying " it's great to see the addition of new teams in New York state giving wrestlers a chance to compete in college. Hopefully with teams like Hudson Valley C.C., SUNY Albany, SUNY Cobleskill and ourselves it will keep alot of great local talent from here in Section 2 of New York State right at home to continue their academic and wrestling careers in college."

Next up for Rensselaer is the Northeast Conference Championships in which they are co-hosting, Friday 2/27 and Saturday 2/28 in Albany, NY.
