Army Competes in Monarch Invite

The USMAPS wrestling team opened up the 2009-10 season with the Monarch Invitational wrestling tournament in Wilkes-Barre, PA this last weekend. The wrestlers who competed were: 125 Zack Wells, 141: Paul Hancock, 149: Ryan Bilyeu and Spencer Breeden, 157: Alexandre Roy and Abraham Rivera, 165: Michel Russell, 174: John Mejia, 184: Shawn Sweany, 197: Jeff Ducote.
Zack Wells drew Kyle Travers, Rochester Inst Tech in the first round and although he made a valiant effort, Wells fell by a major decision. In the first round of consolations, Zack wrestled Mike Murcia, Scranton University. In this match Wells wrestled a very tough and had the score really close till the end, but got caught and pinned.
Paul Hancock had a great opening tournament for the Black Knights. He decisioned Chris Gugliotti, York College 9-6 in the first round. In the second round, Hancock drew the number one seed, Mike Gregg, Oneonta State. In a great match littered with reversals and takedowns, Hancock came out on top 9-5. In the semi finals, Paul took his opponent, Joey Hauser, Oneonta State, into overtime, but came up short 12-10. In the backside, Hancock was defeated by Kris Krawchuk, Wilkes University, and then wrestled Mike Gregg, Oneonta State again where he won 10-5. This concluded his first college tournament where he received 5th place.
At 149, USMAPS had two wrestlers, Ryan Bilyeu and Spencer Breeden. Breeden wrestled a tough first round versus Michael Slabinski, Gettysburg, who he lost by fall in the third period. Bilyeu won his first round versus Matt Ellery, Wilkes University 5-2. Then in his second round, drew the number two seed Franklin Davis, Kings College. In this match, Bilyeu lost by a score of 5-2. Both wrestlers then had to compete with each other. In this contest, Bilyeu came up on top by a close match with a score of 6-2. Bilyeu then won by tech fall over Pat Gibson, Muhlenberg. Next, Bilyeu then won by decision over Tom Manning, Scranton University 6-4. Lastly, Bilyeu wrestled Joey Walters of Army JV and was beaten by decision 3-1.
At 157, USMAPS had two wrestlers, Alexandre Roy and Abraham Rivera. Roy had a tremendous tournament and turned a lot of heads with his two victories over two Oneonta State wrestlers, Nikita Fedorov and Franklin Provenzano. Roy however lost two bouts, one to Jason Wake, Rochester Inst Tech by a major decision, and one to Joe Fiore, Gettysburg by fall. Abraham Rivera wrestled tough but came up short with two losses one to John Rocha, Oneonta State by technical fall and one to Ken Ludwig, Muhlenberg by fall.
At 165, USMAPS had Michel Russell wrestle in the Monarch Invite. His first match he wrestled Mike Hoff, Wilkes University and pinned him in 4:11. In the second round, Russell wrestled Zach Downing, York College who beat Russell by a score of 10-3. In the third round, Russell lost to John Sternlicht, Muhlenberg by technical fall.
In the 174 weight class USMAPS had John Mejia wrestle. He wrestled Ben Johnstone, Rochester Inst Tech first round and lost to him by a score of 8-0. Next, Mejia defeated Alexander Stroh by a score of 6-2. In the third round Mejia fell to Zachary Feador, Rochester Inst Tech.
Shawn Sweany wrestled 184 for the USMAPS Black Knights. In the first round, Sweany wrestled Mike Reilly of Kings College who defeated Sweany by a fall. Next, Shawn wrestled Nick Aloia, Muhlenberg who injury defaulted. In the third round, Sweany wrestled Nick Genovese, Scranton University and defeated him by pin. Next, Shawn wrestled John Page, York College and defeated him by pin. In the fifth round, Sweany pinned Kevin Digiulio, Scranton University. Lastly, for the consolation finals, Sweany wrestled Josh Wake, Oneonta State who he lost to in a close 7-6 match. Shawn ended up taking 4th place.
USMAPS heaviest wrestler, Jeff Ducote wrestled 197. Jeff went into overtime in his first match but came up empty handed when Chris Smith, Wilkes University defeated him 3-1. In the next two rounds, Jeff defeated two Gettysburg wrestlers by decision, Anthony Parry and Marshall Puls respectfully by round. Ducote then won by injury forfeit from Brendan Dwyer, Kings College. In his last match, Jeff wrestled John Starcevich, York College who defeated Ducote in a technical fall.
Overall, USMAPS had a good outing at the King’s College Monarch Invite. They won a 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
