Builders Win NCWA Mid-Atlantic Conference
BUENA VISTA, VA. -- For the seventh straight season, the Apprentice School wrestling team captured the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Mid Atlantic Conference Championship on Saturday at Southern Virginia University. The Builders scored 184 points to outdistance University of Maryland Baltimore County (132) and James Madison (87.5) in the 14-team event.
The conference title was the seventh straight Mid-Atlantic championship and the ninth straight year the Builders have won a conference title. In the 12 years they have participated in the NCWA, they have won a conference title 10 times.
Apprentice School took home five individual titles to bring its total to 52 conference champions in its 12 years in the NCWA. The Builders had a good afternoon as 17 of the 19 wrestlers that competed, placed in the top five and its B team finished fourth in the event.
Two wrestlers repeated as conference champions - sophomore Marcus Chevres (133) and senior Will Harcum (165). Chevres, a sophomore from Norfolk, Va., went 3-0 at 133 pounds winning his opening match by pin in 54 seconds over Tyler Jivden of Middle Tennessee State. His next match was a 16-1 technical fall win over fifth-seeded Jacob Henley of East Tennessee State. In the finals, the top-seeded Chevres scored a 9-3 decision over second-seeded Kekura Musa of UMBC. Those wins raised his record this year to 29-5.
Harcum, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., also went 3-0 at 165 pounds with a pair of wins by pin. He opened his tournament winning in 58 seconds over Richard Dahan of Gallaudet University before scoring a win in 1:24 over fourth-seeded Brad Reedy of Radford University. In the championship, the top-seeded Harcum won by a default over Eric Russo of VMI. Those three wins raised Harcum's record to 41-9 making him the third Builder wrestler in the last 19 years to break 40 wins in a single season. He joins Cecil Lee (46-9 in 2008-09) and Micah Amrozowicz (45-8 in 2005-06) as the only Builders to win over 40 matches in a season. Harcum also tied the single season pin record as he now has 25.
Sophomore Ricky Anderson went 4-0 at 149 pounds to win that title after finishing second as a freshman. The Chesapeake, Va. native won all four of his matches by pin and all of those inside of the first two minutes. With those pins he raised his season total to 19 and now has a 25-5 record. Anderson won in 53 seconds, 1:28, 21 seconds and then defeated teammate Will Sexton in 1:48 to win the weight class.
Senior Ty Holley was the lone wrestler for the Builders to win his weight class not as a top-seed. The second-seeded Holley, from Erwin, NC, went 3-0 with a pair of wins by pin to raise his record to 29-6. Holley defeated Trevor Meadows of James Madison in 1:06, Brian Wolfe on South Carolina by a 7-3 decision and won the weight class by pin over top-seeded Brian Samuels of UMBC in 1:12.
