Georgia Southern University wins Bear Open
Georgia Southern University traveled to Macon, Georgia over the Halloween weekend to compete in the annual Bear Open hosted by Mercer University. The team was treated well for their hard work with 3 champions, 2 runner-ups, and 3 third place finishers.
Joe Salvatore at 174, Sean Carney 285, and Brooks Pendleton at 235 all finished as tournament champions. Chris Stewart at 133 and Darren Sexton at 285 took second place with Sexton falling to fellow teammate Sean Carney in the finals match. Lorenzo Gonzalez at 141, Jimmy Miller at 184, and Shaun Scruggs at 197 each took 3rd at their respective weight classes as well.
Returning National Champion Brooks Pendleton also received a trophy award for Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. This was GSU's first ever team win at any wrestling tournament since the team started again in 2008. The Eagles travel next week to Charleston, SC to compete in the Citadel Open in a field of NCAA DI and DII programs.
