Defending Champion Upset at National Duals

01/28/2011 -

DALTON, Ga. — Top-seeded California Baptist raced through the first two rounds without giving up a match, and six of the top eight seeds held their placement through the opening rounds of the NCWA National Duals Championships.

The 10th-seeded U.S. Naval Academy Prep School surprised defending champion Marion Military Institute (Ala.), 26-19, in a third-round match to move into the final-16 bracket, and MMI must now get past No. 9-seed Mercer in order to reach the quarterfinals. Mercer upended No. 8 seed MIT in the third round at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center.

The tournament continues all day Saturday with 16 teams still in championship contention beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Central Florida, the No. 2 seed, moved past Connecticut (56-4) and Cincinnati (46-12) to move into the round of 16, where it will face Texas-Arlington on Saturday morning. No. 3-seed Apprentice School (Va.) and No. 4 Maryland-Baltimore County also swept opening matches handily.
