BGSU WRESTLING NEWS

Vol. 3
Bowling Green, Ohio
March 07

On February 24, 2007, the BGSU Wrestling Team traveled to Grand Valley State University to compete in the 2007 NCWA North Central Conference Championships. The top eight wrestlers in each weight class at the NCC Championships qualified for the NCWA National Championships held this year in Dallas, Texas.

The twenty-two team North Central Conference is considered one of the most, if not the most, competitive of the seven NCWA Conferences. Last year, the NCC Conference produced the NCWA National Champion, Grand Valley State University, four individual NCWA National Champions and thirteen NCWA All-Americans. In the BGSU Wrestling Team’s inaugural season last year, the Falcons sent six qualifiers to Nationals.

At the 2007 NCC Championships, ten BGSU wrestlers qualified for the 2007 NCWA National Championships. Through the hard work of both the wrestlers and coaches, BGSU has now advanced a total of sixteen wrestlers to the NCWA Nationals in the team’s first two years of existence!

This season’s National Qualifiers were Rudy Corpus at 125, Craig Marker at 133, Anthony Nicholson at 141, Dan Mundrick at 149, Dan Crilley at 149, Dan Wise at 157, Scott Liechty at 165, Adam Bellflower at 165, Jared Voldness at 184 and Ray Rossman at 235. Nicholson and Mundrick were also 2006 National Qualifiers. Two BGSU coaches, Ken White and Terry Mundrick, were named 2007 North Central Conference Co-Coaches of the year, an honor really belonging to the entire BGSU wrestling program.

The BGSU team traveled to Dallas for the 2007 NCWA Nationals held March 8th through march 10th. Although not placing as high as hoped, the team wrestled extremely hard with Rudy Corpus and Adam Bellflower coming within one victory of All-American honors at 125 and 165, respectively. The 2007 NCC Champion, Grand Valley State University, repeated as the 2007 NCWA National Champion. In the two NCWA polls following Nationals, BGSU was nationally ranked seventeenth in both the NCWA Coaches Poll and in total NCWA points.

Looking toward next season, BGSU will have eight returning National Qualifiers, losing only two seniors, Dan Mundrick and Dan Crilley, both at 149. The future indeed looks bright for BGSU Wrestling with a young, but now experienced team poised to take the program to an even higher level next season.

We would be remiss if we did not again thank you, the Newsletter subscribers, for your financial support and also thank everyone who has faithfully supported the team in so many ways throughout the season. We look forward to your continued involvement next year.
