|Achievements:||In 2008, Coach Ulrich "Rick" Bartel became the first coach of wrestling at the University of Connecticut in Storrs since 1981. After 31 successful seasons as a high school & College level coach in Rhode Island, the UConn program, entering its fifth season is set to compete this season at a high level in the NCWA. A graduate of Rhode Island College in Providence (RI), Rick wrestled in the 177 lb. weight class for the undefeated "Anchormen" team of 1974-75. He also played football for several area teams of the Eastern Football League as a Def. End, linebaker and special teams player before injuries made it impossible to play any longer. He has coached 6 NCWA All American wrestlers and is Rhode Island's only High School All American Coach. |
|Coaching Experience:||An award winning teacher with the Providence (RI) Public School System for 29 years, Rick coached High School wrestling teams at Providence's Hope HS & Central HS, Our Lady of Providence Seminary, and most recently at Ponaganset HS (No. Scituate, RI) where his son Erik was a member of his team. In 1999, he became the first wrestling coach at Bryant College (now Bryant University) and is the founder of the popular Groundhog Day Wrestling Tournament of the Northeast Conference. Rick also coached HS football at Providence's Hope HS for many years.|
Rick has been a referee of youth, Middle School, High School and Prep School wrestling in Rhode Island and Connecticut for many years as well as with the NCWA. During the summer, he is on the staff of the Competitive Edge Wrestling Camp (CT), Inner Circle Wretling Camp (RI) and the Brown University Wrestling School (RI).
An award winning teacher, Rick lives at the Snort'n Buck Farm in Foster, RI with his lovely wife Diane where they raise champion quarter horses, Apaloosas, llamas, pigs and chickens.
