Collegiate Wrestling Returns to Lake Superior State
inCollegiate wrestling has become Lake Superior State's newest athletic team. Founded in October of 2009, this makes the first official wrestling team at Lake State since 1994.With the founding of the team, this makes Lake Superior State the only collegiate wrestling program in the Upper Peninsula. It has already created a buzz, some students of Northern Michigan University have said that they are willing to transfer in order to compete in their favored sport. The team came about as a brain child of founder Harvey Lee and James Miller. Miller and Lee, who have been wrestling for 10 years and 4 years respectively, came to Lake State and found there was no wrestling team for them to continue their careers. The two freshmen vowed to change that. Through hard work, numerous fliers, and lots of paperwork, Laker Wrestling was born. The management for the team consists of Eric Thomas (2x All-American) as Head Coach, Harvey Lee as President, James Miller as Vice President, Ricky Bova as treasurer, and Amanda Wisniewski as manager. Already, after just one prep season without competition, the team has a roster of around 50 (30 of which are regulars). The Laker Wrestling team will compete in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association during their 2010-2011 season in the Northern Central Conference. But bigger things are still envisioned, “I want to make this a full NCAA team.” asserts Lee, with hopes to get Lake State's wrestling tradition rolling again. Anyone who has spent any time in the Norris Center has seen the aged plaques of the great wrestlers that walked these halls. Now we can finally start putting them back up.
