Cal Baptist's Santana Does it Again

11/29/2010 -
Santana outscored his five opponents, 43-21.

FULERTON, Calif. --- Chris Santana defeated Stanford's Timmy Boone, 5-3, to win the 149-pound weight class at the highly-competitive Fullerton Open Wrestling Tournament hosted by Cal State Fullerton.

It is Santana's second tournament title this year to go along with the title from the season-opening Santa Ana Tournament. He has placed in all four tournaments he has wrestled in this year.

Six of the 10 weight classes were won by NCAA Division I wrestlers. Nine of the 10 championship matches were decided by two points or less. Cal Poly SLO was the only school to win more than one title.

Santana began his title run with a 24-10 win over Edwardo Meraz of Cuesta College in the first round before downing Luke Ashmore of Arizona State, 8-4, in the second round. He then made quick work of Calvin Miller of Bakersfield-Unattached, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before advancing to the finals with a slim 4-3 win over Joel Smith of Arizona State-Unattached in the semifinals.

Boone had given up just 10 points combined in his four previous matches before Santana was able to score five to get the title.

"Overall, we wrestled very good and had some huge wins against some tough opponents," said CBU Head Coach John Petty. "Chris may have had a program-changing moment today wrestling the way he did. He worked hard and epitomized what we stand for as a program in terms of work ethic. His teammates really rallied around him, too, pushing him all the way to the title. As a team, they are beginning to believe we can take it to the next level."

C.J. Knowland (174) came within one match of wrestling in a placer match, but he narrowly lost to eventual third-place finisher Bobby Bowman of Arizona State-Unattached in the wrestleback bracket.

Dylan Cataline (141) and Alex Evers (285) were both just two matches away from placing.
