Achievements:Rick Bolhuis heads in to his fourth year at the helm of the Grand Valley State University Wrestling program. His Lakers capped the 2008-2009 season with a runner-up finish at the NCWA National Championships. This is the ninth consecutive top-three national placement for the GVSU Wrestling team, including five championships. At the 2009 Championships, six Lakers earned All-American status, bringing Bolhuis’ total to 29 in three seasons.

In addition to the runner-up finish, the Lakers won the inaugural NCWA National Duals in 2009 (defeating the University of Central Florida in the finals), following two consecutive championships at the NWCA National Duals, and their ninth consecutive North Central/Central Conference Championship. Bolhuis was named North Central Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. These championships were a testament to their team depth and balance as the Lakers qualified 22 wrestlers to the National Tournament.

In the 2007-2008 season, the Lakers won the NCWA National Championships. This was the third championship in-a-row and fifth in eight years for the Lakers. It is the second for Rick Bolhuis in just his second year, garnering him National Coach of the Year accolades from the NCWA. The Lakers completed the year with two NCWA National Champions (Joe Mendez and Jordan Richardson) and ten All-Americans. They also won the NWCA National Duals for the second consecutive year, defeating Newman University in the finals.

In the 2006-2007 season, Bolhuis led the Lakers to a NWCA National Duals championship, defeating the University of Central Florida in the finals. The season culminated with a NCWA National Championship on the strength of two National Champions (Billy Johnson and Joe Mendez) and thirteen All-Americans.

Prior to coaching at GVSU, Bolhuis served as an assistant coach at East Kentwood High School under Rick Smith for one year. The Falcons had two All-State wrestlers in Diego Rodriguez and Jake Bohn.

During his wrestling career, Bolhuis was a four-time NCWA All-American, finishing as runner-up three times and capping his collegiate career with a National Championship at 174 pounds in 2004. He is the only wrestler to reach the championship finals of the NCWA National Tournament four times. While a member of the GVSU Wrestling team, the team won two NCWA National Championships (2001 and 2002), finished third in 2003, and finished as runners-up in 2004.

Bolhuis is a native of Jenison, Michigan. He was an MHSAA runner-up at Jenison High School. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University in 2005. He teaches math at East Kentwood High School. He and his wife Carla have a dog named Louie, after the GVSU mascot, Louie the Laker.
