Marion Military Institute Controls NCWA Southeastern Conference Tourney

Marion Military’s wrestling team displaced University of Central Florida as the dominant team of the NCWA’s Southeastern Conference. On Saturday, February 28, MMI powered its way to victory by placing six of eleven grapplers in the SEC finals and the team revealed the depth of its squad by placing eleven of its members in the top three qualifiers in the tournament. MMI finished with 197 points, ahead of second-place UCF with 163 points and a strong third-place Florida A & M squad, which garnered 96 points. MMI’s 125-pound Reece Freeman was chosen as outstanding lightweight for the tournament in a very competitive 125-pound weight class and Coach Jim Hazewinkel became the SEC’s Coach of the Year in recognition of his efforts and the team’s accomplishments.
University of Central Florida finished strong with three champions at 133, 157, and 184, and four wrestlers among the top three finishers.
Host Kennesaw State University and Mercer University’s Dave Mathews ran an efficient and well-organized tournament and are to be commended for their efforts.
